Produced between 1977 and 1998, the aircraft's official name is the M20J, but it was marketed as the 201 to highlight its top speed of 201 mph (miles per hour). It was the first aircraft to exceed 200 mph with an engine producing 200 hp.
The 201 is, to the surprise of many, the work of the late LeRoy LoPresti. LoPresti had extensive aeronautical experience, including a stint on the Apollo lunar program at Grumman. He became almost legendary for his ability to get the best out of an aircraft through aerodynamic cleanups, which he had successfully done on the Grumman Tiger.
